Energy efficiency
Photovoltaics
The JED Campus is designed for energy efficiency. A significant portion of the electricity requirements is covered by a photovoltaic system on the roof. In addition, a vertical solar system on the façade ensures additional use of solar energy.
The site has a modern district heating and cooling system. Combined with high-quality insulation, this creates an environmentally friendly property with a very low carbon footprint. The quality of the building materials, the architectural integration and the good indoor air quality are further features that contribute to the sustainability of the building.
The photovoltaic systems produce approximately 200,000 kWh of electricity per year. What does this mean in concrete terms?
The energy produced could:
- Supply 45 four-person households with electricity throughout the year.
- Complete 32 laps around the Earth in an electric car: this would allow electric cars to travel a total of over 1.3 million kilometres.
- 4 million laptop hours: Enough electricity to run a laptop continuously for 450 years.
- 150 years of refrigerator use: A refrigerator could run for over 55,000 days.
Surplus energy is fed into the general power grid so that others can also benefit from it.
Rooftop gardens
Green roof gardens on Building D have a positive effect on the building’s microclimate. Green roofs insulate against heat and cold and contribute to biodiversity by providing a valuable habitat for insects.

5 households
Households of four people are supplied with electricity all year round.
2 trips round the world in an electric car
That would be enough for electric cars to travel a total of over 1.3 million kilometres.

Enough electricity to power a laptop continuously for 450 years.
150 years of fridge operation
